Show #16: Fess

I was going to post an R.L. Burnside show to commemorate his death but I haven't been able to locate it in my archives. So I'm in the process of getting another copy and will put it up when I have it.

The gulf coast areas and especially New Orleans has been on people's minds lately because of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and so I've decided to do a show that harkens back to happier times in The Big Easy. New Orleans has a rich musical heritage. It is widely considered to be the birthplace of jazz, was the location of the first recordings of Cajun music, has been home to countless zydeco musicians, and had a thriving rhythm and blues scene whose swing contrasted with the R&B coming out of Detroit. (A good intro can be found on The Best of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues Volumes One and Two from Rhino Records.)

This week we have Professor "Fess" Longhair with The Meters. It was recorded on 5 March 1973 at St. Bernard's in Chalmers, Louisiana. Although it's a soundboard recording, it is a bit hissy. Still, it's a great listen.
