Show #25: Steve Hackett Acostic Trio

October 17th, 2005

Although I spent last Thrusday and Friday nights at shows in Milwaukee, I’m heading back tomorrow night to catch the Steve Hackett Acoustic Trio. Hackett was the guitarist in Genesis from 1970 until 1977. Not only did he retain the bucolic acoustic stylings of his predecessor Anthony Phillips, but he also gave the band’s music a harder edge as demonstrated in “The Musical Box” and “Return of the Giant Hogweed” from Nursery Cryme. He recorded his first solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte, in 1975 as the band was recovering from the loss of Peter Gabriel. Featuring fellow Genesis bandmates Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins, Voyage is often referred to as the “lost” Genesis album.

It resumed in 1978 with Please Don’t Touch and continues to this day. His solo output varies widely from progressive rock to blues to world music fusion to the music at hand, classical guitar. He has released 5 albums of classical guitar music:

Bay of Kings
Momentum
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Sketches of Satie
Metamorpheus
