Dave Zero Ends Hootenany

Madison's community radio station, WORT, bids farewell to DJ Dave Zero next month. Our local weekly rag, Isthmus, has the story:

When I heard the news, I got that "O'Cayz Corral burned down last night" feeling again: After a seven-year run on WORT-FM, Dave Zero will host his last Friday afternoon "Hootenanny" show on Jan. 13.

After all, Dr. Dave took to the airwaves back in 1998, when Madison was still just two years removed from the Club de Wash fire and complaints persisted about a dearth of venues. Between spins of PJ Harvey, the Old 97's and Guided by Voices, Zero opened WORT's studio and gave local bands an alternative stage. Perhaps he didn't save our scene, but he surely nurtured it through some gloomy days.

I wish Dave well and am sure I'll see him around town. Hopefully he'll continue his Tuesday shift at Mad City Music. I also found this bit interesting:

Dr. Dave has some opinions about the future of WORT as he departs. In an e-mail exchange following our interview, he expressed the view that "community radio needs change to survive." Despite some longstanding hosts who "still have a passion for what they do," he says, "there are quite a few that should have let it go years ago." He's concerned that in changing too little, "the station can lose its focus on who it represents."

Now, who could he be talking about...?
