Show #35: Mad Dog Fagin in Madtown
As I'll be leaving town this weekend for work again, I'm posting next week's show a bit early...

This time around it's from a favorite of mine - Jethro Tull. The show at hand (which I attended) was recorded here in Madison last fall on 3 November at the newly-opened Overture Center for the Arts. I believe Tull were the first rock band to play there at Overture Hall which was designed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra in mind. Although an audience recording, it's quite good which serves as testimony to the great acoustics of the hall as well as the talents of the guy manning the board. You'll hear some banter from the stage about the new joint as well as about the results of the presidential election which took place the day before.
I was set to interview keyboardist Andy Giddings before the show but some miscommunication between him and his publicist put the kibosh on that. Still, I got to meet him briefly, say hello to Ian Anderson & Martin Barre PLUS get poked fun at by Ian's wife Shona! I also got to chat with Ian & Shona's son, James, who was a roadie. Someone had clued him and the rest of the roadies on a local tavern, Stillwaters, where many a sorority girl was to be had...
Ahem.
This is the first half of the concert from that night and is the "acoustic" set. While not 100% acoustic, the band did leave the harder stuff until the second set. There's plenty of acoustic guitar, flute, accordian, etc.. The show featured the second-ever performance of "Wond'ring Aloud" by the band from 1971's Aqualung which they threw into the setlist for this tour. In addition, the live premiere of guitarist Martin Barre's solo track "I Raise My Glass to You" is also present. (It appears on his Stage Fright album from 2003.) Highlights include the extended accordian solo on "Mother Goose" and the classic "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day". Plus there's "Jack in the Green" which has some personal significance to me as I've got a tattoo of Jack's face on my right arm.
I will try to post the second set in the near future. Next week will be my winter solstice/holiday show. And keep an eye out for a seasonal video too.
