Show# 60: Neil Young

Neil Young's latest film, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, is now showing here in Madison so I thought I'd put up some Neil.

In late 1989, Neil Young was working his back into the limelight. He'd spent most of the 1980's creating uneven albums and battling his record label, Geffen. The title track from his 1988 album, This Note's For You, created a stir for having been banned from MTV for a time because of it's blatant anti-corporate message. He returned to the studio and recorded an album called Times Square. It was filled with heavy, distorted guitar and plenty of feedback. The album was pulled at the last minute just after promo copies had been received by some radio stations. Young returned to the studio and emerged with Freedom which was released on 3 October 1989. It was bookended by acoustic and electric versions of "Rockin' In the Free World" and contained many songs salvaged from the aborted Times Square. (Excepting "Box Car", the rest of the Times Square songs appeared on the Eldorado EP.) Young also delved into his vast bag of tunes and resurrected "Too Far Gone", a bit of rolling folk which dated from the mid-70s.

Hailed as a return to form, Freedom was a critical and commericial success. It was the first in a string of heavy, grungy albums which gained him a newer, more youthful following and earned him the title of "The Godfather of Grunge".

In a twist, today's show is an all-acoustic affair that was recorded in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on 10 December 1989. I've trimmed the recording a bit and exorcised some of the older songs that litter classic rock radio so as to get the show down to around an hour and to also concentrate on the Freedom material.

Hi Jim - I have grabbed a Stills-Young show. Keep an eye out for it in the coming weeks. Has the weather turned? I think it's supposed to be a fairly nice day here. The outdoor music festival season begins shortly!

Hi, Palmer, The weather is better. It's warmer, high 60's, but still cloudy. We are expecting rain, in the next few hours. Have a nice holiday weekend. We plan to use our grill, on Monday. Thanks, for the update. Jim
