Show #61: Buck Owens
As I reported earlier this week, country legend Buck Owens passed away on Saturday. Many people know only his 1961 hit "Act Naturally" and only the cover of the song by The Beatles. Personally, when I think of him, I think of "Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass" because I've listened to that song countless times after a few beers. But that's another story...
Owens established the "Bakersfield sound" in the late 1950s/early 60s. He gave country twang at a time when the music was very sappy & anodyne and given to the use of string sections. In the 70s, he would become the co-host of the television show Hee-Haw. Although he is now departed, his influence can be heard in the songs of artists such as Dwight Yoakam and Dale Watson.
This performance was recorded on 16 July 1998 at the Santa Monica Pier in California.
Setlist:
Act Naturally
Together Again
Loves Gonna Live Here
Cryin' Time
Under Your Spell
Tall Dark Stranger
Second Fiddle
Tiger By The Tail
Play That Funky Music (Yes, you read this right.)
