There were some rumors last fall of a Genesis reunion but they were laid to rest with a statement from the band’s management which said:
“There are no decisions by Genesis to perform anywhere whatsoever at this time. This situation will not alter in the next twelve months.”
Well, they apparently decided to let the idea of a reunion rest for one year but now the rumors have proven to be accurate. Phil Collins recently revealed in a radio interview on KGO AM810 that they were in the early stages of trying to coordinate schedule and such to actually reunite. The relevant bit can be heard here. And here’s what he said:
“We sat in a room last November, the 5 of us; Peter Gabriel, Me, Steve, Mike & Tony, to discuss the possibility of doing something. And that something would be ‘The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway’, which is the last thing we did. Doing a limited run of shows, recording it, filming it. And everybody’s kinda enthusiastic about doing it. We’re all trying to work out time to do it”.
Presumably this wouldn’t happen until next year which will be the 33rd anniversary of the release of The Lamb and the probable release date of the oft-delayed 5.1 surround mix of the album on SACD. Would they tour the States? As I am positive I wrote last fall when reunion rumors were floating around, I’m ambivalent about the whole matter. And now that I hear the idea is to just do The Lamb… live, I’m leaning towards don’t do it. I’d much prefer that, if they do reunite, there’s new material involved instead of just a trip down memory lane. Do ya suppose they’d use all the slides and costumes like they did back in ‘74-’75? I’m thinking that a new Slipperman costume would have to be made as there’s no way Gabriel could fit into the old one these days.
