Music at the Movies

June 23rd, 2006

Here’s the listing of music movies at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago for next month:

2005, Ari Alexander and Ergis Magnússon, Iceland, 88 min.

Iceland is not only a tiny island nation that caps the globe; it is also a constantly transforming environment for musical imagination. Beautifully shot, SCREAMING MASTERPIECES shows how this unique country, neither Scandinavian nor European, produces the unique music of such artists as Sigur Rós, Hilmar Örn, and Björk (seen here at all stages of her career). 35mm. 1973, D A Pennebaker, USA, 100 min.

David Bowie appears in his electrifying final performance as the androgynous Martian rock star Ziggy Stardust at London’s Hammersmith Odeon Theater in 1973. Pennebaker’s film captures the aura of Bowie at the height of his glam power as he performs “Oh, You Pretty Things,’’ ‘’Space Oddity,’’ ‘’Suffragette City,’’ ‘’Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide,” and more. Newly restored 35mm print. (JD)
