New Genesis Recordings Surface

The past few months have seen some Genesis shows enter general circulation which were previously only possessed by the upper echelon, so to speak, of Genesis traders.

Starting with the most recent, we have a new and higher-quality audience recording of the band's performance at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from 23 October 1992. The show is notable for being the only time the band did "Carpet Crawlers" on the We Can't Dance tour. And I believe it was also the last time Phil Collins performed "Throwing It All Away" with Genesis. In fact, I think it's the last time they did it period as I don't believe it was performed by Ray Wilson during his stint as singer.

Next up is a fantastic soundboard recording from their 3 January 1977 show at the Rainbow Theatre in London. It was only the third show to feature new drummer Chester Thompson, who assisted in the live context only. There are a few bits, such as the drum duet after "Dance on a Volcano", that show Thompson still finding his footing. Overall, though, his drumming sounds quite stady and assured.

Next up is a portion of their show from 10 June 1976 at the Hammersmith Odeon, London. This is not the complete show but rather 8 songs which were broadcast on the "British Biscuit" radio show in mid-August of that year. The source of this recording is "pre-FM", i.e. - from a set of 2 reels that were sent out to radio stations for broadcast. Needless to say, this is an absolutely fanastic recording. Every last bit of Bill Bruford's percussion rack is audible and the bass pedals are right out front, just as I like them.

Lastly, we harken back to the Peter Gabriel era of the band. Genesis played 2 shows on 19 December 1973, their fifth and sixth of a multi-night stand at The Roxy in Los Angeles. The early show has been floating around for a while but this, the late show, only recently surfaced and it's a soundboard to boot. I haven't had a chance to listen to much of it yet but I can say that the second half of "Supper's Ready" is pretty menacing as Gabriel really got into the "666!" bit.

Rumor is that the next "hidden" recording to see the light of day is going to be from the Lamb tour - 12 April 1975, Martinihal-Centrum, Groningen, Holland. It's an open-air mic recording meaning a couple mics were placed onstage and routed into the soundboard for recording. Stay tuned.
