This month at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago is You’re Gonna Miss Me, a documentary about Rory Erickson:
YOU’RE GONNA MISS ME
2005, Keven McAlester, USA, 91 min.
with Patti Smith, Thurston Moore
Charismatic singer Roky Erickson fronted the Texas psychedelic rock band The 13th Floor Elevators. Raucous and visionary, they charted with the 1966 Billboard hit “You’re Gonna Miss Me.” Erickson’s fame and public endorsements of drug use got him in trouble with the law, and he subsequently pled insanity to a drug charge. Erickson never rebounded from shock treatments and his more than three-year stint in a mental institution. YOU’RE GONNA MISS ME charts the rise and fall of an almost legend, a true American-Gothic tragedy. Beta SP video.
