Show #85: U2
I presume that U2 need no introduction. Honestly, I hadn't intended to put up U2 when I set about putting a show together this evening - it just sort of happened. I was arguing with myself as to whether I should throw up some prog or some blues or R&B. The latter was winning and I was trying to decide among Howlin' Wolf, Ray Charles, and Junior Wells. Looking over the recordings, I saw the U2 gig and realized that I hadn't listened to them in ages.
Truth be known, I'm not the biggest U2 fan on the planet but there was just something about the prospect of listening to some Joshua Tree-era U2 which I found immensely appealing. I saw an old friend this past weekend along with her infant daughter. I think chatting about various people we knew in high school and seeing her as a mother reminded me how far along we are from those lazy, hazy days of high school.
Today's performance was recorded on 7 November 1987, back when I was a sophomore and before Bono took to wearing those horrid-looking sunglasses. (I should also admit that I really didn't get into U2 until a year or two after The Joshua Tree was released.) Still, playing the tracks in Winamp to help decide what would end up in today's show was a real trip and brought back a lot of memories.
This was recorded at McNichols Arena in Denver, Colorado. It is an excellent soundboard recording and rumor has it that it was lifted from the footage filmed for the Rattle and Hum movie. I chose to put up the second half of the set mainly because "Silver and Gold" is on it. It was a tough choice, though, as some of my favorite tunes from The Joshua Tree were in the first half ("Trip Through Your Wire", "In God's Country"). However, I wanted to avoid covers of The Beatles and "Sunday Bloody Sunday". And so here's what we're left with (notice the b-side "Spanish Eyes"):
Bad
October
New Year's Day
Pride (In the Name of Love)
Star Spangled Banner
Bullet the Blue Sky
Running to Stand Still
Silver and Gold
Spanish Eyes
With or Without You
