Music Films - Dec. 06

Music movies at the Gene Siskel Film Center for December:

HIGH AND DRY
2005, Michael Toubassi, USA, 126 min.

Subtitled “Where the Desert Meets Rock ‘n’ Roll,” HIGH AND DRY captures the spirit of the influential and eclectic community of musicians that has emerged from Tucson, Arizona, over the past 20 years. Through rare live performances and interviews, including members of Giant Sand, Calexico, Doo Rag, and the Supersuckers, this captivating documentary captures the beautiful intricacy of a small town’s fertile music scene.

EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN--HALBER MENSCH
1986, Sogo Ishii, Japan, ca. 60 min.

This astonishing historical document is focused on the innovative industrial group from Berlin, Einstürzende Neubauten. Using an arsenal that includes metallic objects and power tools and aided by eerie Butoh-like dancers, Neubauten’s menacing, sometimes harsh aesthetic is featured in all its penetrating glory in this special film made in 1986 as an accompaniment to their LP of the same name.

NINA SIMONE, LOVE SORCERESS
1998, Rene Letzgus, France, 75 min.

We bring back this extraordinary document of a 1976 European concert by the late, legendary singer. NINA SIMONE, LOVE SORCERESS captures Simone’s many musical moods--it’s the tension between her unpredictable behavior and her breathtaking singing that makes this performance so riveting.
