Show #94: Anoushka Shankar

This week's show features Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar and Sukanya Rajan.

Born in London in 1981, her father began to teach her how to play the sitar at the age of 9. Four years later Anoushka made her performance debut in New Dehli, India. It was this same year that she made her debut in a recording studio by playing on her father's album, In Celebration. Anoushka, her first solo effort, was released in 1998. Her 2001 album, Live at Carnegie Hall was nominated for a Grammy Award. Anoushka has played many concerts both with her father and on her own. She's also played onstage with a host of popular Western musicians such as Sting, Herbie Hancock, and Peter Gabriel.

Honestly, I am not very familiar with Indian classical music and this recording is my introduction to Anoushka Shankar so I really can't blather on as I do with other musicians. What I can say that this is some great music. It's very evocative, very ethereal. I love the dynamics as there are passages with sitar alone and those that feature some great percussion. Enjoy!

The recording here was either recorded from the soundboard or was part of an FM broadcast. It's from 28 July 2002 with Anoushka was the closing act at the Siam Tent at the WOMAD festival that year. Unfortunately, I do not have a setlist.

Yeah, I wish I'd seen her when she was here in Madison last. Thanks for listening. Let me know if you're interested in a CD of the show.
