Kantara

January 13th, 2007

After writing my previous post about Ian Anderson’s look ahead to 2007, I took a look at the band Kantara which features Anne Marie Calhoun, who toured with Tull last year.

Any band that describes what they play as “Arab-Appalachian music” is just something you have to check out. Head to their music page for some samples. Since Oh Brother, Where Art Thou was released, the traditional “Wayfaring Stranger” has been recorded with more frequency but I don’t think any of the treatments have given the songs a Tunisian touch as Kantara have done.

Thanks for the link. It’s sounds such a strange mix but it works so well. I love the oud and Tunisian music generally especially Anouar Brahem and Kantara takes it to another dimension.

You’re welcome. Unfortunately, this band is another that I’ve had to put onto my “check-out-when-you-have-time” list.
