As Arch Stanton pointed out to me yesterday, even indie rockers like Genesis. The reunited incarnation of the band which originally lasted from 1976-1996 opened their Turn It On Again tour in Helsinki on Monday the 11th. To commemorate the inaugural gig, this week it’s Genesis.

Cast your minds back to 1986 when Invisible Touch was at the top of the charts and the boys in the band dressed as in the photo above. (Meanwhile I was growing my hair out.) Steinberger guitars ruled the day in the Genesis camp. By this time I had been a fan of the group for about 4 years and I remember quite well the day my friend Pete brought the “Invisible Touch” 7-inch single (Atlantic 7-89407) to school and we were quite excited at the prospect new material. That evening we retired to Pete’s bedroom, closed the door and put the precious piece of vinyl on the turntable. We listened intently and critically assessed the two songs: the title track didn’t thrill us too much but the B-side, “The Last Domino”, the second half of a longer song, was much better. Compact discs were the new kid on the black and Pete’s grandfather had worked for an electronics company like Pioneer so he got a CD player for his birthday and Invisible Touch was his first purchase. We reveled in the all digital sonic glory of the aluminum disc.
My first concert experience took place in October 1986 when Pete and I bussed it out to the Rosemont Horizon (now the Allstate Arena) to catch Genesis on one engagement of a 5-night stand. I lived in Chicago at the time and da Bears were a great team back then so Phil Collins tweaked the audience participation time bit to accommodate the grunts of Bears fans. The oldies medley was also changed and Pete and I were pleasantly surprised to hear all of “…In That Quiet Earth” and absolutely ecstatic when “Apocalypse in 9/8″ from “Supper’s Ready” emerged from the din of the Wind and Wuthering classic.

Today I take a little trip back to New York City on 30 September 1986. Just as in Chicago, the boys did a 5-night stand and this is from the second night. A copy of a soundboard recording done by the band got leaked to fans and was “remastered” by Jeff Miller for B.U.R.P. – Batatis Ultimate Remaster Project. Mark Batatis is a long-time Genesis fan and collector who enlisted the help of Miller to tweak the audio of some rare concert recordings by the band and put them out into the trading circles. Ergo the quality is quite good here.

What? More Genesis? I think I was promised a Mogwai show.
I distinctly remember making no such promises. Comments in chat aren’t legally binding, are they?
