Show #125: Mogwai

This show is by request for my friend Dogger who reminded me last week that I didn't post the show he wanted – Mogwai. When I knew him in high school, it was Led Zeppelin and Van Halen but now he's gone all post-rock on me.

This is what Wikipedia has to say about post rock:

The post-rock approach to music, such as the emphasis on instrumental work and sonic texture, is similar to the earlier New Age movement, which came out of the modern folk tradition. Post-rock is characterized by repetition of musical motifs and subtle changes, with an extremely wide range of dynamics. Most often, post-rock songs are lengthy and instrumental, containing repetitive build-ups of timbre, dynamics and texture. Guitar timbres are usually smooth. 3rd bridge guitars like the Fender Jaguar and the Jazzmaster in combination with delay and reverb are popular equipment. Harmonically, there is an emphasis on consonance, though by no means is there a definitive rule of thumb.

And this is what the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has to say about Mogwai:

Listen to them, NOW

The band are from Scotland and formed in the mid-1990s. They supposedly drew some influence from The Dirty Three and I can hear that. There is a general similarity between the two if you follow the equation violin=guitar. The songs begin all slow and moody and then build up to a chaotic crescendo. Listening to them reminds me of Can but there's less emphasis on the minimalism and more on dynamics. Plus Mogwai's music is heavier as well.

The group did the soundtrack to Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, which was shown here in Madison earlier this year at the Wisconsin Film Festival. In addition they contributed to the soundtrack for The Fountain and their music has appeared on several TV shows including CSI and the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood which might give one the impression that they are on the path to becoming the next Popol Vuh.

The program today is from the Fireside Bowl in Chicago. And by bowl, I don't mean like the Hollywood Bowl, I mean that it's an old bowling alley turned all-ages venue. I found a site where it said that the "bands play next to the ball returns on lanes 1 and 2". I can only imagine what the ambience was like at this gig. It was recorded on 25 May 2002 from the soundboard.

Setlist:

You Don't Know Jesus
Mogwai Fear Satan
Star Wars
Cody
Christmas Steps
C# (Hunted By A Freak)
Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home
Helicon 1

From YouTube, this is "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" recorded at the La Route du Rock festival in France in 2001.

We drove past the Fireside the last time we were in Chi, I was intrigued - I'm looking forward to listening to this show, and not just because there might be bowling sounds in the background.

Did we? I thought we drove down Belmont. I'll take your word on it, though.

Oh, yeah. Well, we drove past a bowling alley what plays the rock and roll music. (Rock and Bowl?, on Diversey, not the Fireside)
Don't trust my memory for things like this.

In any case, I want to see a band at a bowling alley. A good band, that is.

No bowling sounds in the recording, damn.

Wasn't Cheap Trick 'discovered' in a bowling alley in Rockford?

I'm not sure what you're definition of good is.

I dunno where Cheap Trick was discovered. I thought you were the keeper of CT lore.

I'm not sure what my definition of good is either. I heard a crappy hillbilly/punk band at a bowling alley once. Not them.
