Show #128: Riverside
I was actually a good boy this week and had the show uploaded on Monday but I've been too busy to write a post. At least those of you who subscribe to the feed have had it available for a few days now.

It's been about 3 weeks since we've had white males being all proggy so Riverside gets the nod this week. The band are a progressive metal outfit hailing from Warsaw, Poland. While I've never had a problem finding shows from Poland by American & English bands, it's rare to find stuff by Polish bands or much of anything from Eastern European groups generally. Touchstones for the noise these guys make include Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree. Bassist Mariusz Duda provides vocals and I find his voice very reminiscent of Ray Weston's and expected him to starting singing "The Cheese Stands Alone" when I first heard one of the tunes here. (FYI all you non-proggers: Ray Weston is from Echolyn.) The rest of Riverside's line-up is filled out by Piotr Grudziński on guitars, Piotr Kozieradzki on drums, and keyboardist Michał Łapaj.
They got their start in 2001 when Grudziński, Duda, and Kozieradzki met and realized that, not only did they share a love for death metal, but progressive rock as well. Jacek Melnicki's keyboards rounded out the group who looked to meld their metal and prog inclinations. Melnicki left in late 2003 and was replaced by Michał Łapaj. For a bit more detail, check out bio page at the band's website.
At this point, I'm still getting into Riverside. An initial listen to their studio matieral left me feeling uninspired but I grabbed a live recording and found it to be great. Also great is their drummer, Piotr Kozieradzki. Just look at him.

Now *that* is the face of a drummer. No delicate little Nancy boy twinkling the ivories or plucking some strings. No. Kozieradzki is a big burly guy with a moon face who has the manly task of bashing away at the skins. Just look at his Slavic stoicism. Can't you imagine him working at a foundry during Communist rule? That's the face of a guy who'll get 'er done.
OK, onto the show.

When I got this recording, I was told it was a soundboard but it's really an audience recording. Just listen and you'll hear why I've come to this conclusion. Still, it is a fantastic recording. The date was 31 March of this year and the venue was Das Rind in Rüsselsheim, Germany.
Setlist:
Lucid Dream IV
Out of Myself
Volte-face
I Turned You Down
Second Life Syndrome
Cybernetic Pillow
The Piece Reflecting The Mental State Of One Of The Members Of Our Band
Download show
Riverside
YouTube isn't exactly awash in Riverside videos but I did manage to find this performance of Reality Dream".

Thanks for the concert, the quality is indeed pretty good. A better quality bootleg is one of the name Live @ Nearfest. It's available here: http://www.mininova.org/tor/766126
A few corrections to this setlist though, the first song is "Lucid Dream IV" not Intro Jam. And the last song is called "The Piece Reflecting The Mental State Of One Of The Members Of Our Band". Quite a name monster ;)
Your welcome for the concert and thanks for the corrections and the torrent link. I shall correct the setlist anon.
Are you sure that's Lucid dream 4(...)?
I thought THAT TRACK was supposed to be on the 2nd disc of the Limited Edition of Rapid Eye Movement as an new extra song??!!!
Perhaps it already was on one of the EP's, which I do not own yet? From the Polish EP from earlier this year?
I m still confused not knowing what's on what disc.....
Anyway, tomorrow I hope to find out if and what because I m gonna get myself that special edition of REM.....
I'm really looking forward hearing the tracks on disc 2. Having played a copy of the short version of REM to death the last weeks and I still have not BOUGHT anything, so........
And on the 13th of December I'll see them again in all their GLORY in De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, NL.
Mark
Thanx Bro.....Thanx Indeed.....!
Anon - You're welcome. Let me know if you want the show on CD.
