Show #130: Music of the Baroque

If you subscribe to my RSS feed then you got this show last week. I was just busy and the act of making a post eluded me. Since this is late, I shall post another show later this week. Anyway, we're going retro today - back to the 17th & 18th centuries.

This is a performance by Chicago's Music of the Baroque. The Baroque period lasted from roughly 1600-1760. A short explanation of the music of the period can be found at Wikipedia:

During the period, music theory, diatonic tonality, and imitative counterpoint developed. More elaborate musical ornamentation, as well as changes in musical notation and advances in the way instruments were played also appeared. Baroque music would see an expansion in the size, range and complexity of performance, as well as the establishment of opera as a type of musical performance. Many musical terms and concepts from this era are still in use today. It has general characteristics, unity of emotion (which meant the same), ornamentation, and a contrasting rhythm with improvisation. Its melodies usually had a continuous line moving, terrace dynamics and extensions (either adding to the music or subtracting.)

Since I am most certainly not an expert on Western art music, readers are also encouraged to check out baroquemusic.org which has more info on the genre, instruments, composers, and more. Even folks unfamiliar with classical music will recognize the names of some of the composers of the period: Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel. Having said this, none of those gents will be featured in this show. The performances were captured between 16-18 December of 2006.
