I received a request recently from a listener who wanted to hear some Genesis in celebration of the release of the newest box set which covers the Peter Gabriel era excepting the band’s very first album. In particular, he wanted to hear the 20 October 1973 show. The band played two gigs that day at the Rainbow Theatre in London. The late show was broadcasted on the radio and thusly it ended up being heavily bootlegged. Today’s recording is of the well-known boot The Great Lost Live Album.

At the time of this concert, the band were out in support of their fifth studio album, Selling England by the Pound, which had been released the previous month. While not a huge departure from their previous works, the band expand its sound for the occasion. Tony Banks finally got his hands on synthesizers while Mike Rutherford threw some electric sitar down for one track. The album also saw guitarist Steve Hackett make some major contributions. The solo from “Firth of Fifth” remains a favorite 35 years later and the song was rarely out of setlists after this tour. “After the Ordeal” gave fans a good indication of what his solo material would sound like when Hackett struck out on his own a couple years later.
The tour built on the theatrics that the band had established in the preceding year and a half. Peter Gabriel brought new costumes aboard for the new songs and the stage was given an odd backdrop made up of hourglass-shaped bits with screens in between which had images projected upon them.

Setlist:
Watcher of the Skies
Dancing With the Moonlit Knight
I Know What I Like
Firth of Fifth
More Fool Me
The Battle of Epping Forest
Supper’s Ready
Knocking off time for the Cosmic Lawnmower…
