Gigs'n'Such – 5 Jan 09

January 5th, 2009

I started 2009 off on a proggy note yesterday and I want to add to it, if only for a bit.

Last Friday the BBC celebrated 70s prog with the documentary Prog Rock Britannia: An Observation in Three Movements which looked at prog’s origins and heyday and featured Genesis, Procul Harum, Yes, ELP, Soft Machine, et al. Here’s a clip from it about Mike Oldfield.

To accompany the show was another one of performances culled from the BBC’s archives called Prog at the BBC. There was a bit of King Crimson, some Caravan, and The Nice, amongst others.

Yesterday I noted that the Genesis tribute band The Musical Box were going to stop in Milwaukee next month at the Pabst Theatre. A couple days after that, Madison’s prog cover band, PROG will be at the High Noon Saloon.

Looking ahead, I see that the Adrian Belew Power Trio will be at Shank Hall in Milwaukee on 17 April.

ABPT’s cousins, the California Guitar Trio, come to Land of Cheese on Saturday, 14 March when they appear at the Mabel Tainter Center For the Arts in Menominee.

Tempest bring their Celtic/Norwegian folk rock to but one tour stop in the upper Midwest – Chicago. That’s on 18 April at Reggie’s.

Moving away from prog, I was pleasantly surprised to see a new regular gig at The Frequency here in Madison – an open blues jam hosted by AJ Love. The first installment is next Tuesday, the 13th and will feature, this guy, John Primer.

Also in a blues vein, local maestro Bobby Bryan should have a new album out soon. I’m not sure if his 7 February gig at the Harmony is still to be the CD release party or not. His next gig is this Friday at JT Whitney’s brewpub @ 9.

Son Volt are set to release a new album in May and are doing some tour dates next month but are steering clear of Madison and vicininty.

Finally, I’ll swing back to prog and note that Steve Wilson’s Insurgentes is due next month.
