Show #174: Genesis '76

In honor of my trek later this month to see the Genesis tribute band The Musical Box at the Pabst in Milwaukee, the first show of 2009 is going to be some classic Genesis.

If you're unfamiliar with The Musical Box, then know that they reproduce old Genesis shows with costumes, lights, slides, onstage banter, and all. I have seen them twice before and they are a blast. Up until now, these Canucks have stuck to recreating concerts from the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis but, just as PG moved on, so have TMB. This time around they're doing the 1976 G tour for A Trick of the Tail which was Phil Collins' first as lead singer.

Gabriel left the band in the spring of 1975 after the tour in support of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway wrapped up but the four remaining members (Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, and Mike Rutherford) labored onwards. A bootleg shows that in the fall of that year the band were in Trident Studios and had most of A Trick of the Tail done. These outtakes are minus vocals and sections that would be sewn together in the editing room remain separate but the ATotT we know and love is almost all there.

The album would be released in February of 1976 with the tour kicking off the following month on the 26th at the London Arena in London, Ontario. ATotT is a favorite of mine not in the least because it contains "Squonk", the first Genesis song from the 1970s with which I fell in love. While the lyrics tell the story of a hunter aiming for the legendary creature of the forests of Pennsylvania, the music is vaguely bluesy and features, in my humble opinion, some of Collins' best work on the drums of his career.

This first show of the new year comes second show of Genesis' ATotT tour – 27 March 1976 at the Auditorium in Kitchener, Ontario. Collins is strong in the vocal department although long-time fans know that he would go on to refine his storytelling abilities and general rapport with the audience. Indeed, the song intro duties were passed around and you can hear Rutherford surprise the audience by announcing "White Mountain", a song not played by the band in ages. Since he'd be up front behind a microphone, Collins inveigled Bill Bruford of Yes and King Crimson fame to pound the skins.

As for sound quality, this show is very good. It's an open air mic recording which means that the band placed a mic on or near the stage to capture their performance. Not as good as the FM broadcasts from Pittsburgh and Cleveland that would come in April, but still quite nice and an historic show.

As the tour closed in July, the band filmed a couple of their shows which resulted in the Genesis in Concert movie. This is a clip from it with the band doing "Entangled" from ATotT.
