Get ready to headbang! This week I am going with Madison metal gods and goddess – Luna Mortis.

The band dates back to 2001 when it was formed in Monroe, a bit south of Madison. At that time they were known as The Ottoman Empire but changed the moniker to Luna Mortis last year at about the same time they signed to Century Media, an international label specializing in metal and related styles. To the best of my knowledge, guitarist Brian Koenig is the only remaining original member. Hopefully my friend Christopher will chime in with a precise metal designation for LM because I’m not really sure where to place them. To my ears, they bounce from progressive metal to death metal with perhaps some sub-genres in between. Singer Mary Zimmer ably switches between death metal growling and harmonious crooning while the music ranges from a nimble pandemonium of bass drum and guitar to a slower, sludgier melodic grist.
This year the band’s first album on Century – The Absence – was released and saw them embark on their first national tour wherein they opened for Edguy, which is where this week’s show comes in.

One of the tour stops was last month at Station 4 in St. Paul, Minnesota on the 15th where a taper recorded the whole concert. Since Luna Mortis was first to the stage, their set was only about half an hour. It may be short, but it’s a pretty sweet audience recording. If anyone can fill in the missing song title, it’d be appreciated.
Setlist:
The Absence
Forever More
Fountain Of Youth
Reformation
Ruin
*Unknown Title*
Ash
Some video of Luna Mortis’ performance from this night is up at YouTube. Here’s “Reformation”.
