An Oral History of The Wall

Guitar World has an oral history of the making of The Wall. Not only does it give an idea of the deteriorating relationships of the guys in Pink Floyd, but also reveals just what a cocksmoker Roger Waters was (is?).

WATERS: Why did I fire Rick? Because he was not prepared to cooperate in the making of the record. What actually happened was The Wall was the first album where we didn’t divide the production credit between everybody in the band. At the beginning of the process, when I said I was going to bring Bob Ezrin in and he was going to get paid, I said, “I’m going to produce the record as well, so is Dave, so we’re going to get paid as well, but Nick, you don’t actually do any record production, and Rick neither do you. So you’re not going to get paid.”

Also interesting is David Gilmour’s commentary on putting “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)” together:

It wasn’t my idea to do disco music, it was Bob’s. He said to me, “Go to a couple of clubs and listen to what’s happening with disco music,” so I forced myself out and listened to loud, four-to-the-bar bass drums and stuff and thought, Gawd, awful! Then we went back and tried to turn one of the “Another Brick in the Wall” parts into one of those so it would be catchy. We did the same exercise on “Run Like Hell.”
