A week or so ago a friend sent me the link to a video on YouTube of a band called Those Darlins performing their song “Wild One”. I really enjoyed the tune so I went out and found one of their shows.

The trio that is Those Darlins hails from Tennessee and consists of Nikki on baritone ukulele, Jessi on guitar, and Kelley on bass. They started out playing old time country acoustically but soon embraced an outlaw attitude. The addition of a drummer and electric guitar gave the band’s sound a whole new dimension. I’ve not heard their self-titled debut but here the band sound like a mix of honky tonk, Johnny Cash chug-a-lug, and a healthy dose of garage rock as well. Miles away from the power country of today’s Nashville, it is hardly surprising that they don’t want anything to do with it and Nashville doesn’t want anything to do with them. (Though it would be amusing to find out how those unshaven armpits would go down at the Country Music Awards.)
The show this week was recorded on the 22nd of last month at the Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles. I can’t say that this is the best audience recording ever made but it certainly isn’t bad. Unfortunately, I don’t have the setlist so perhaps a listener can fill that in for us.
Most, if not all, of this concert was recorded from the audience on video as well. Here’s “Snaggle Tooth Mama”.

Yeah, I saw that interview before. The AV Club used it at their Austin portal.
