My own preferences for The Decemberists’ music at this point are for the more proggy tunes. The Hazards of Love and “The Island”. When I read that their new album, The King Is Dead, was a distinct move away from prog pomp I was a bit disappointed. But then I heard the first single, “Down By the Water”. It’s a great song that reminds me of early REM. The King Is Dead is likely going to be my first purchase of an album released this year.
You can hear it in its entirety up at NPR.
The band open their tour in support of the album tomorrow in New York. Unsurprisingly, there is no stop here in Madison, at least on this leg. However, they will be in Milwaukee on 5 February at the Riverside Theatre.
