Show #232: John Primer

January 8th, 2011

I pawned off show note writing duty to Dave Watts of Madison’s WORT for this one. Many thanks to him. I had originally intended to post this prior to Primer’s appearance here in Madison on the 4th but failed miserably. However, keep an eye out for him to appear an an upcoming Chicago Blues Tuesday.

John Primer’s 1996 release “The Real Deal” couldn’t be more aptly named. He grew up in Mississippi and as many bluesmen before him made his way to Chicago. He started to make his way up the ladder eventually ending up in the house band at Theresa’s Lounge. There he became friends with Sammy Lawhorn, a Muddy Waters Band alumnus who was a great influence on his slide guitar sound. Eventually he joined Willie Dixon’s Chicago Blues All-Stars, the Muddy Waters Band (where he became the bandleader until Muddy’s death in 1983) and Magic Slim and the Teardrops. All those years of playing, learning and finding his own voice are evident in this set from the club the Boerderij City in Zoetermeer, Holland from March 19, 2010.
