vonFrickle: We Meet Again

January 23rd, 2011

A couple years ago I heard about a band from downstate Illinois called vonFrickle. I bought their album Arrhythmia and really enjoyed it. Then I made the mistake of lending it to a friend who promptly lost it. Well, I recently reclaimed the album from stacks of his CDs and have been listening to it and loving it. A review is forthcoming.

My interest in the band and finding my long-lost CD was rekindled after I read that they’d be performing at this year’s NEARFest. And I see this morning that their website is finally up and that they have a new album out called vonFrickle. You can hear it online at their site’s media page.

With the way they dress onstage I think of The Blue Man Group and Man or Astro Man? while their music seems to me, in the most general and shortest-hand kind of way to be a mix of King Crimson and Frank Zappa.

Here’s “Pyramidium”, the lead-off track from Arrythmia:

Digging in my CD’s while my back was turned, eh? I see.

It was for your own good. You were turning into Marv so I had to put a stop to it.

No, if I were turning into Marv I’d have given it to a third party.
