I grabbed this show by Accordion Tribe simply because five people playing the accordion sounded interesting.
(Pic found here.)
The band were formed in 1996 and included Lars Hollmer (Sweden), Guy Klucevsek (USA), Maria Kalaniemi (Finland), Otto Lechner (Austria), and Bratko Bibic (Slovenia). My impression is that Klucevsek was the kingpin here and that he assembled the group. Hollmer died in 2008 and the rest carried on for a couple years before the Tribe went their separate ways in 2010.
I was expecting a heavy dose of folk considering the instrumentation and I got that – but also got more. The folks elements are here but often times they take the songs into other territories. Some tunes have improvised vocalizations, for instance. Another seems to get dragged into modernist dissonance while others whip up a glorious cacophony.
Sonically this is a wonderful recording of an FM broadcast. The show was at the Stadsschouwburg in Nijmegen, Netherlands on 3 November 2002.

This, I think, is a chunk of a TV documentary about the band called Accordion Tribe – Music Travels and includes some performance footage.
