The other night I listened to BBC Radio 4’s Twilight World of Syd Barrett. The program documented Barrett’s lapse into mental illness, how his Pink Floyd bandmates dealt with it, and what Barrett did after he left the band. I appreciated how it treated the tragedy and, while Barrett is made out to be a genius, the show didn’t romanticize what happened to him. Take a listen to a preview.
I noticed today that what I take to be considered the Holy Grail of early Floyd fans has surfaced online: Pink Floyd’s first appearance on Top of the Pops from July 1967 when they mimed to “See Emily Play”. I’m not a Floyd expert so, if someone who is one is reading, please correct me but this was apparently thought lost to ages when the BBC wiped the tape for reuse as was the practice back then. The quality is less than optimal and I have no idea of the lineage, but it’s neat slice of rock history. Perhaps a better quality copy will now emerge as the cat is now out of the bag.
